After the barrage of area storms last Friday, some in Whitehouse were questioning why the city's new storm alert system did not go off. According to City Manager Ronny Fite, the storm spotters that were activated did not see the rotation necessary to call for the citywide alarm.

Early voting ended Tuesday, and the public now has one more chance to vote, with local city and school races being decided on Election Day, Saturday, May 10. Both Whitehouse and Troup will have the same polling locations: Troup Municipal Library and Whitehouse United Methodist Church. Hours will be 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Teams set for Troup Trivia Night

Approximately 20 teams have indicated they will participate in tonight's Trivia Contest at Troup High School. With a team entry fee of $50, all monies raised go toward scholarships for seniors. The Troup Rotary Club is sponsoring the event.

Sprayground opens for summer

Need a way to cool off? The City of Tyler Parks and Recreation Depar tment has announced the opening of the Faulkner Park Sprayground for the warm-weather season. The sprayground is located at 410 West Cumberland Road and will be open daily, through the warm season, from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. There is no cost to come and enjoy the sprayground.

Wes is the son of Bell and Dennis Jackson and Reid and Chet Troxell, all of Tyler. Debbie is a graduate of Stephen F. Wheat enters boot camp for USMC

David Wheat was accepted into the United States Marine Corps on May 5 and began boot camp in San Diego. The son of Lynn Sloma of Whitehouse, Wheat is expected to graduate boot camp on Aug. 1 and officially earn the title of Marine.

Kee graduating from Harding U

Cole Kee will graduate May 10 from Harding University in Searcy, Ark., with a degree in electrical engineering. Cole graduated from Whitehouse High School attended Tyler Junior College for one year on a basketball scholarship, then transferred to Harding University where he completed three more years of his scholarship.

WHS bands to perform Monday

The award-winning Whitehouse High School bands will present their annual Spring Concert on Monday evening, May 12 in the Whitehouse High School Arena at 7. The Whitehouse Band Booster Club is also hosting an "Out back Hamburger Supper" that night from 5-7 p.m. as a fundraiser to help the band with their expenses for their band trip next year.

Cain students devote week to celebrating science

Students at Cain Elementary learned that science is more than microscopes and laboratories as they took part in teacher Teresa Walker's first science week program. Guest speakers shared the usefulness of science in a multitude of fields, imparting the knowledge that science is really part of everything.

SECOND GRADE OUTING

The entire second grade at Troup Elementary recently enjoyed its annual outing. This year's group had brunch at First Baptist Church and then attended a production of "Beauty and the Beast" at The University of Texas at Tyler Cowan Center. The tables at First Baptist were decorated in keeping with the theme, and all students got to keep a rose. The second-grade outing is a tradition at Troup ISD. The school pays for the students' tickets, with parents planning and providing the brunch or luncheon. The idea came about as a way to expose the students to the arts.

Students return to open time capsule

Several former students of Paula Guthrie's first grade class gathered outside their old classroom at Cain Elementary recently to unearth a time capsule the class created and buried in 1997. Along with a bit of water that seeped into the plastic pickle jar, the seniors and Guthrie pulled out Zip-lock bags containing special treasures, long-ago hidden away.

Students of the week at Whitehouse Junior High School are Angela Knight, seventh grade, and Trent Tatom, eighth. Angela is a cheerleader, member of the NJHS, and plays volleyball, basketball and track. Her favorite class is science. Trent plays spring football and is in the NJHS. His favorite class is athletics.

Plant sale Saturday at THS greenhouse

Troup FFA is holding a plant sale Saturday to benefit its horticulture program. Students will be selling french marigolds, petunias, coleus, impatiens, tomatoes, hanging baskets and many other varieties from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Troup High School greenhouse.

Troup to face Hemphill in Area contest

The Tigers survived a late rally by Elkhart in game two of their best-of-three meeting to advance to the round of Area to meet Hemphill. The first game will be 6 p.m. Friday at Carthage, with game two 1 p.m. Saturday at Central Pollock. Game three will follow if necessary.

Ladycats out after McKinney sweep

After making school history with a bi-district win over Lindale, Whitehouse lost a competitive best-ofthree series with McKinney North, 2-0. The Ladycats certainly had their chances in the Area match-up, as a couple of errors led to McKinney scores in the first game of the series, and their opponents rallied from a 4-1 deficit in game two.

WHS honors athletes at spring banquet

All spring sports at Whitehouse High School were celebrated Monday night, with special mention of the recordsetting success of several girls programs. "Last year was a recordbreaking year, and we had a better year this year than last year," said athletic director Randy McFarlin in his opening remarks. "The girls are keeping the standard up, up and up.

Troup's All Sports Athletic Banquet is scheduled Tuesday, May 20 at Troup High School. Dinner will be served in the cafeteria at 6 p.m., with the awards ceremony immediately following in the auditorium. Sadler's Restaurant is catering the banquet.

JV Ladycats finish 12-3

With the varsity Ladycats posting their first playoff win this year, junior team members are showing the talent to keep the program on the right track. The JV Ladycats finished 12- 3 on the season and 5-2 in district competition, under the leadership of head coach Jon Sheppard.

The Whitehouse Ladycat Basketball Camp will be June 2- 6 at WHS from 8:30 a.m. to noon daily. Girls entering grades one through nine will be eligible to attend and will be grouped according to age and ability. Registration fee is $60, or you can put down $20 to reserve a spot, with the remaining $40 due the first day of camp.
