AARP seeks volunteers for free tax service

The American Association of Retired Persons tax-aide service is seeking volunteers to assist low- and middle-income tax payers (with special attention to those age 60 and older) to prepare their 2006 federal income tax returns. This is a free service provided by the AARP Foundation (a non-profit charity) in cooperation with the IRS.

Volunteers should have experience preparing their own tax returns and/or those of others. Computer skills are preferred but not required. Following

training or self-study, volunteers will need to pass an IRS exam to be certified as an AARP tax-aide counselor.

Counselors will generally serve at one or more of the four Smith County sites, with three currently in Tyler and one in Lindale. Service will require from four to six hours per week during the tax season (Feb. 1 through April 16).

Interested persons may call Jim Novy, local coordinator, at 903-581-1809 or visit the web site at www.aarp.org/taxaide.
