The campuses of Brown Elementary, Higgins Intermediate and Whitehouse Junior High all hosted Veterans Day programs Friday. Veterans were recognized and celebrated with patriotic music and slide shows. At left, a tribute to the Unknown Soldier is offered. Above, veteran Ken Muckelroy plays "Taps." Dr. Muckelroy is part of a group, approximately 6,000 in number, who make sure that "Taps" is played for all veterans' funerals.

Each of the campuses asked students to recognize family and friends serving in the military in different ways, such as supplying a photo for a wall display or multimedia presentation or planting a flag in honor of someone. One of those attending the Veterans Day programs was Waymon Stewart, above. Mr. Stewart just returned from active duty in Iraq this past Tuesday. Mr. Stewart previously had served on the WISD school board for 15 years before retiring in 2005.
