Trial starts for former police chief

Former Troup Police Chief Chester Kennedy faced Judge Cynthia Stevens Kent rather than a jury on Monday. Kennedy is charged with tampering with evidence and theft for allegedly taking evidence seized through the Troup Police Department.

During an investigation of former Troup police Officer Mark Turner, back in March, Smith County Sheriff's Department investigators found reason to do a search of the Chief's office which led to his arrest.

Kennedy faces up to ten years in prison if convicted of the felony charges.

Testimony continues today in the 114th District court.
