Two Head Start classes celebrated Reading is Fundamental (RIF) on Nov. 17. RIF is the nation's oldest and largest literacy organization serving children and their parents.
The Reading Is Fundamental program encourages children to become lifetime readers by building self-esteem and involving the most important people in their lives, parents, teachers, and other kids, in the learning process.
The theme of Head Start's RIF event was "We are Thankful for Books." The children wore pilgrim hats to help celebrate the occasion.
The students also enjoyed participating in making a healthy snack. Several parents
participated as volunteer readers.
Like all RIF activities, "We are Thankful for Books" culminated in an exciting book distribution where all of the children selected their very own book to keep at no cost to them or their families.
In 12 counties that Region VII Head Start serves, more than 2,010 children have received books this year.
Praising the Higgins Intermediate RIF program, RIF National President Bill Trueheart commented: "RIF salutes the dedicated volunteers, sponsors and children participating in "We are Thankful for Books." Their efforts are helping build a nation of readers.
