James Bowman

Graveside services for Colonel Retired James Whitwell Bowman, 96, Troup, were held Saturday, Dec. 23, at Pinecrest Cemetery, Troup, with Rev. Mike Cline officiating. Burial was under the direction of Cottle Funeral Home, Troup.

Mr. Bowman died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2006 in a Whitehouse nursing home. He was born Sept. 9, 1910 in Oklahoma to the late Lee and Ella Whitwell Bowman. He married Wanda Martin in 1939 and she preceded him in death in 2001. He had a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from the University of Oklahoma.

Mr. Bowman had retired in 1965 from the U.S. Army, having served 30 years in many domestic and foreign posts. He served in combat during World War II, taking part in the D-Day landing in Sicily and the in the invasion of Normandy with the early landing on Omaha Beach. He was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart. He had lived in Rogers Arkansas for 30 years before moving to Troup in 1996.

Survivors include a daughter, Bonnie Hinkle, Troup; four grandchildren, Greg Hinkle, Roanoke, Virginia, Diane Hinkle, Roundrock, Whit Bowman, Whitehouse, and Paul Hinkle, Troup; and two great grandchildren.
