Courtney Lux is in the running for a chance at a $50,000 drawing, thanks to her performance in the USA World Showcase talent competition.

Lux, a junior at Whitehouse High School, traveled to Las Vegas over the Thanksgiving break to participate in the singing portion of the competition, which also has dancing, comedy, modeling and acting categories.

The show was televised nationally Monday, Jan. 8 on the PAX channel and can also be viewed online at www.usaworldshowcase.com. Online voting continues until Jan. 20.

If Lux is a top vote-getter, she will win $2,000 plus a paid trip back to Las Vegas to watch the next show and be entered in a drawing for $50,000.

"It was amazing and kind of scary," said Lux of her first-ever competition.

Her dream is to be on Broadway, and she attended a musical theater camp in New York over the Christmas holidays.

Lux is the daughter of Vicki and Kirk Hart of Tyler. Mrs. Hart originally heard about the competition and brought it to her daughter's attention. The process of qualifying for the show began about four months ago and included singing for the judges over the phone, said Lux.

The number of competitors was pared down from 40,000 to the 150 who were invited to Vegas; only 50 singers were chosen to be a part of the televised competition, said Lux, who won first place in the judges' voting and received a trophy for her performance of "Orange Colored Sky."
