Town hall meeting tonight

The Whitehouse City Council will consider and hear public input at a town hall meeting tonight. Three main issues will be on the agenda -- parks, water and transportation -- although speakers may address or question the council on any subject.

"We're going to be doing a lot of things this year," said Mayor Jake Jacobson, "and we really want a good turnout. "We want our citizens to come and tell us what they want us to do."

At last month's city council meeting, members approved certificates of obligation for $4.5 million to fund a proposed park site (including $1.5 million for a second water well) and a $150,000 per year contract with Lake Striker to reseve water rights. For the past several months the council has wrestled with alternatives to accepting a new contract with the City of Tyler. Although costly, the proposals would give the city more control of its water.

"The key to our future is to get people to come in and understand how and why we spend money the way we do," said Jacobson.

The town hall meeting is scheduled for 6:30 tonight at Cain Elementary cafeteria.
