Combating loneliness requires reaching out

It is loneliness that makes the loudest noise. This is as true of men as of dogs." Eric Hoffer wrote those words 36 years ago in New York City. Eric, although living in a city of seven million people, understood what it was like to be lonely. As a kid I can remember the song that crooned "one is the loneliest number there could ever be."

What a shame to be alone in the world today but I would be willing to bet that in this world of fast food, cell phones, emails, QVC, and 1,001 television stations, people are still craving to be with one another. I firmly believe they want to know that they are valued and can make a positive contribution to the world around them. What a terrible fate to learn that you are inconsequential.

Recently, I was asked by a man to offer some suggestions as to how someone (his wife) could become involved in Troup, Texas.

He stated that she didn't know anyone and didn't have any friends here. He was concerned that she would become increasingly unhappy with herself and her life if she were only able to see solitude in her future.

Consequently, I have put together a list of groups that would open their arms to new people wishing to become involved in "Tiger" town:

The Athletic Booster Club, Band Booster Club, Academic Booster Club, Rotary Club, Troup Library, Troup Women's Civic Organization, Chamber of Commerce, Mom's Club, Troup Cares, Bible Study Groups, The Methodist Men's Group, Church Youth Groups, Church, Church Choirs, Troup Youth Athletic Association.

If you desire other avenues of involvement you could serve as a Substitute Teacher, Troup Elementary Volunteer, Troup Middle School Volunteer, Troup High School Volunteer, Athletic or Arts events worker or volunteer or patron.

If I were to list the contact information and names of individuals to call to become a member of one of these groups the paper would have to devote an entire section to this effort. However, if you will let your fingers do the walking through the phone book or just call Troup ISD or the City of Troup, you too can be hooked up with many wonderful opportunities for involvement.

One is the loneliest number and being on the outside looking in is no fun either. However, you now have a choice to be involved.

I urge you to pick up the phone and take the first step. Soon, you too will be contributing to the mix of fun and adventure in Troup, Texas.
