Andrew McElroy, an FFA member from Arp, shows off his first-place heifer award in the Simbrah Junior Breeding Beef Heifer Show at the 2007 Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show on Jan. 22. Junior show entries totaled 10,505 at this year's show which ends Feb. 4. Winning exhibitors are awarded cash "premiums" - this year to exceed $89,000 - in addition to monies generated from the sale of animals in the show's sale of champion steers, lambs, barrows and wether goats. Besides record junior entries the show set an overall entry record of 22,673 cattle, sheep, swine, horses, mules, donkeys, llamas, goats, poultry, pigeons and rabbits.
