Whitehouse freshmen end with 15-9 record

The freshman Wildcat basketball team ended its season last week with a road loss to Marshall and then a season ending win over Nacogdoches, giving the frosh a 15-9 overall record and 9-5 district mark.

The game at Marshall on Tuesday night was indicative of other losses in that a sub-par showing from the free throw line (9-19) wound up costing the Wildcats late in the 53-47 loss.

The Wildcats posted a balanced scoring attack with Jace Ainsworth leading the way with 9 points, followed by Logan Taylor with 8, and Justin Haney and Skip Caldwell with 7 each.

In the home game against Nac, the Wildcats saw the Dragons cut into the 25-14 lead they maintained at halftime.

Thanks to the fourth-quarter press forcing turnovers, the Cats pulled away for a 49-34 win.

Payton Smith and Caldwell provided the scoring punch with 15 and 14 points, respectively.

At a team/family gathering after the varsity game, Coach Keith Ellis applauded the efforts of his freshman group.

"This group improved throughout the year, and I am proud of what they accomplished," said Coach Ellis. "With coming into basketball a little late from football, it took a little more time to get to know the kids, but I look forward to seeing what they will do next year."
