The Whitehouse Wildcat varsity basketball team achieved two of their goals last week. The first goal was to go undefeated in district and the other was a 30-win season.

The first step towards these goals last week began in Marshall last Tuesday night when the Wildcats would storm out to a 37-21 lead at the half and then cruise to a 64-43 win.

Mitch Marquis led the way with 14 points, including four bombs from behind the arc while backcourt mate Kyle Ford added 13 on the night.

"We hit 14-17 from the free throw line which is where we need to be going into the playof fs," stated Coach Wally Dawkins.

"The other thing I was proud of tonight is we were able to give a large amount of minutes to several players which will help in the playoffs," said Coach Dawkins.

In the district final Friday night, the Wildcats played host to their rivals from Nacogdoches. It may have been a different court than the previous meeting, but it was the same story as the Wildcats dominated in the first half and then got stronger in a 70-53 win.

The Cats would see their most balanced scoring attack of the season against the Dragons. All five starters finished in double figures, led by senior Luke Shivers with 16.

Shivers was followed by Marquis with 15, Ford with 14, and Brady Parker and Cade Clark with 10 each.

It was a special night at Wildcat Arena as nine seniors were honored in the pre-game activities on senior night. These seniors included Shivers, Layne Tidwell, Parker, Chad Emmons, Kye Heck, Britt Martin, Tyler Fisher, Spencer Hutchins, and Matt Bergman. Also, senior trainer Lee Caldwell was honored, along with assistant coach Reid Gulley.

With the two wins the Wildcats extended their season record to 31-2 and district record to a perfect 14-0 headed into the playoffs.

In a player and parent gathering after the game, Coach Dawkins addressed the group stating that not only was this probably the most talented varsity group he had ever coached but added that these players exhibit the character and pride of the student athlete which makes Wildcat basketball one of the most elite programs in the state.
