Make it happen
Principal Derek Driver

The school year is going by very quickly at Troup High School. Our students and staff members are working diligently to accomplish our goals this year. Our students just took the English Language Arts portion of the TAKS test on Feb. 20 and the remaining portions of the TAKS tests will be given April 17-20. The goal of exemplary for the 2006-2007 school year has not changed. Troup High School is lucky to have such great staff members and students that are willing to put forth great effort towards their objectives.

On Feb. 21 we had our Career/College day that was put together by Tracye Martin, our dean of students. It was fantastic. Our teachers were in charge of getting guest speakers for their classes and they did an awesome job finding guests our students enjoyed listening to. We had 20-plus guest speakers for the career portion in the morning and almost 15 colleges and recruiters in the afternoon for the college part of the program.

In the spring semester our students and staff are involved in a variety of extracurricular activities. Saturday, Feb. 10, the band competed in Solo and Ensemble contest at Stephen F. Austin University. This year's basketball season was good for both the boys' and girls' teams who finished up on Feb. 13. The girls' basketball team made the playoffs for the first time in many years.

Baseball, softball, and track are starting up their spring seasons during the month of February. The baseball team and their fans will be enjoying a renovated field and facilities this year.

One act play and our UIL spring academic meet contests will take place during the month of March. Troup FFA students will be competing this spring in several shows with animal, plant and shop projects. Prom is scheduled for May 5 at the Villa Difelicita on the Van Highway from 8 p.m. to midnight. Graduation ceremonies are going to be held at Tiger Field again this year on May 25 beginning at 8 p.m.

This spring we have also opened and begun using the new facilities purchased through the recent bond election. At the high school alone, we have expanded our facilities to include a new band hall, fine arts wing, and additional cafeteria space. It looks great and really provides the high school with the space our students need. New state-of-the-art sound systems have been installed and are up and running in the auditorium and band hall. If you have not had a chance to come by and look at the new additions, feel free to stop in the office and ask our office staff for a tour and they will gladly show you around.

We have had a tremendous school year thus far even though it has gone by very quickly. Success at THS is the direct result of the great students, staff and faculty members we have at Troup High School.
