Troup Middle School celebrated pi, or the number representing the ratio and circumference of any circle, with a variety of activities scheduled the week before Spring Break. |

Pi, the number representing the ratio of the circumference and diameter of any circle, is approximately equal to 3.14. Pi Day, which is March 14 (or 3-14), once again fell during spring break for Troup ISD so the teachers and students at Troup Middle School celebrated Pi Awareness Week for the entire week before spring break.
Students measured circles to discover the origins of pi, won pies in a Pi Walk, memorized the non-terminating digits of pi, made and ate their own pies, and finished the week by tossing cream pies at a math teacher.
The biggest activity of the week was a fund-raiser for
 | | Troup Cares, a local organization that helps needy families with food and Christmas presents during the holidays. The students of TMS raised $1,000 for the charity by purchasing a piece of pi for $0.25 each, and the grade raising the most money earned the chance to put a pie in the face of its math teacher. The sixth graders raised the most money this year, $518.50, and won the opportunity to toss cream pies at Linda Salgado. There were three students who did an amazing job of memorizing the digits of pi. Eighth grader Nick Holley memorized 120 digits, seventh grader Allie Bowers memorized 127 digits and seventh grader Caitlin Renson memorized 138 digits of pi! |
