Troup cancels city election

With only one candidate per place, the Troup city council was able to cancel the May election for places one, three and four. Jeff Hale, Nancy Boothe and Chip Richardson will be sworn in to their council places at the May 22 council meeting.

The only other action item on the special council agenda Tuesday night was the approval of a school resource officer. This was approved by the school board earlier this month and the council followed suit. The school district will be paying 75 percent of the cost for the officer and the city will pick up the remaining 25 percent.

"The officer will work under the direction of the police depar tment," said Chief Pat Hendrix. "And he will be assigned to the school as his primary duty."

His assignment will allow for more rapid action to any trouble that could occur on the school campuses, however he will be available if needed in an emergency by the city.

City administrator Russ Obar reported on the 2007 application to the Texas Community Development Program. He was disappointed to tell the council that it did not look positive for the city receiving any of that grant money this year. There were so many other cities with bigger projects and more matching funds that Troup just could not compete with this year.

The next regular city council meeting is scheduled for April 9.
