Cats lose on the road

The Wildcat varsity baseball team suffered a tough road loss last Tuesday night at Pine Tree to the district-leading Pirates by the score of 11-3.

Things looked good early on as the Wildcats scored two runs in the second to take an early 2- 1 lead.

The inning began with Heath Mayo being hit by a pitch and then stealing second. After Grant Brandon would fly out to right moving Mayo to third, an errant pick off attempt allowed Mayo to score.

Brady Attaway drew a walk and scored on an RBI single by Chase West. The lead did not last long as the Pirates added six runs off starter Ryan Miner in the bottom of the second to claim a 7-2 lead.

The Cats could only manage a final run in the top of the seventh. Hits were hard to come by on the night with the Wildcats only producing four.

In addition to West's single, Seth Cashion picked up a single in the fourth, Cody Brown singled in the fifth and Evan Beaton added an RBI single in the seventh.

In Friday night's game, the Wildcats travelled to Hallsville where they would again struggle to score runs in an 8-2 loss to the Bobcats.

Unlike Tuesday's game where the Cats struck out 11 times at the hands of Pine Tree pitching, Friday's game would see the Wildcats hit well but with very few balls finding the short grass in the outfield.

Whitehouse jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Cashion hit a two-out double in right center scoring Miner who had previously walked.

The Bobcats would get to Wildcat starter Grant Brandon in the bottom of the second, scoring five runs on six hits and

walk and one Wildcat error.

The Wildcats added a run in the top of the third to cut the lead to 5-2 as Banks Brandon, who went 2-for-3 on the night, led off with a double down the left field line.

Banks Brandon moved to third and later scored on an infield single by Miner that almost slipped into center field. That was all the offense the Wildcats could muster, and Hallsville tacked on three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth.

"The game in Hallsville was very frustrating because I felt like we played pretty well," said Coach Danny Robey. "I felt like we hit the ball good, but we just did not have anything to show for it in the end, plus Grant threw really well. They never hit him that hard, but they found the holes, and we just couldn't seem to do that."

The Wildcats hosted Henderson Tuesday and will play host to Marshall tomorrow at 6 p.m. as they try to claw their way back into the district race.
