Trainers resuscitate WHS athlete

Whitehouse High School trainers used CPR and an automated external defibrillator (AED) to revive a female track athlete who became unresponsive during track practice Monday afternoon.

The sophomore was taken to Tyler by ambulance and then transferred to a Dallas hospital for testing and treatment.

Trainers Carrie Saulters and Jay Ramsey were first on the scene Monday; they assessed the student's vitals, began CPR and called 911. They also requested an AED, and the student was revived by the time an ambulance arrived, according to Daniel Dupree, assistant superintendent.

WISD owns seven AED units with one assigned to Cain, Brown, Higgins, Holloway, junior high and high school campuses. The athletic department also has an AED. UIL guidelines require at least one AED per campus; WISD purchased its AEDs in 2006.

Ramsey is an athletic trainer at WHS; Saulters, a Trinity Mother Frances graduate, is an assistant athletic trainer assigned to the junior high. Several coaches were also on hand to assist as needed, said Dupree.
