Approximately 200 people turned out for Saturday's celebration of the Whitehouse Volunteer Fire Department's 50th anniversary. Current and former firefighters and their families visited and enjoyed a dinner prepared by VFD members.
"We thought it was a very successful event and were pleased with the turnout," said Fire chief Ronny Fite, who accepted a proclamation on behalf of the department from mayor pro tem Dale Moran.
"The Whitehouse Volunteer Fire Department is the fourth pyramid of this community," said Moran, ranking the group with churches, schools and civic organizations as vital components of the city's well-being. "Ever yone is proud of the Whitehouse VFD. You are to be commended."
In addition to Moran's remarks, the widow of former chief Glendal Pike spoke briefly, reminding the crowd to remember the families of firefighters.
"The wives made sacrifices also," said Mary Pike. "There weren't many birthdays, Christmases or Thanksgivings where we haven't said, 'see you later.'"
Mrs. Pike also said she thought her husband had been "prouder of that first fire truck than our first-born son."
Chief Fite also presented three awards at the celebration. He honored 50-year members J.L. Hays, who is still active, and the late Bill Dodd, who died this past August.
Fireman of the Year honors were given to Joe Beddingfield, who passed away in September. Joe's father, Chester Beddingfield, was the only WH VFD member to be lost in the line of duty over the past 50 years.
