Council sets date for water conservation

Whitehouse City Council members got the jump on summer water woes by setting June 1 as the day to ask for voluntary water conservation.

Council considered the issue at April's regular monthly meeting and decided to make June 1 the start of even/odd watering days.

Citizens whose street address is an odd number will water on the odd dates of the month; even number addresses will get the even dates.

Although this is a voluntary measure, the council could impose mandatory restrictions if the need arises.

Water restrictions are a common method during the summer months when water use is at its heaviest; conservation efforts are even more important to the city as it seeks to lessen intake from the City of Tyler.

Since the city's water contract with Tyler expired, council has pursued various ways to achieve self-sufficiency in this area.
