KWB promotes Students for Recycling program

Students at Holloway Middle School get in the spirt of the Students for Recycling program.
Does your family recycle? If not there is no better time to begin than now!!

Until May 31, Whitehouse will be competing with other cities for the most #1 plastics collected. Number 1 plastics are usually soda and drink bottles of any kind.

The contest is sponsored by Sam's Club, Keep America Beautiful and Aquafina as a way of informing and encouraging students to recycle, said Debbie Shafer with Keep Whitehouse Beautiful.

"Last year we received 2,000 fleece jackets made from soda bottles. This year we are competing for backpacks," said Mrs. Shafer. "If we are one of the top 50 cities, your school may win $1,000 from Sam's Club."

The fleece jackets received last year were distributed among children in Whitehouse, Bullard, Troup, Chapel Hill, Child Evangelism Fellowship and Philadelphia Blessing.

Although the jackets were indispensable during the recent Great Texas Trash-Off, when extras were loaned out to participants to counteract 30-de- gree temperatures, Mrs. Shafer said the most imporant thing received from the contest is the knowledge that you are making a difference.

"Recycling is one way to show others that you care about them and our community," she said.

The Recycle Center at Whitehouse is open ever y Wednesday from 7-10 a.m. and 3:30-5 p.m. It is also open on the first and third Saturday of each month from 8-noon.

In addition to the #1 plastics being countered for the contest, you are encouraged to recycle paper, cardboard, #2 plastic, steel cans, aluminum cans, cell phones and ink jet cartridges at the Recycle Center.
