Whitehouse athletes honored at spring banquet

Boys basketball coach Wally Dawkins introduces Reid Gulley as the perfect assistant coach. What makes him perfect? "He agrees with everything I say," Dawkins said.
Whitehouse High School coaches, players and parents gathered Thursday, May 3 for the Spring Athletic Banquet, honoring baseball, softball, track, tennis, soccer, basketball and swimming participants.

Athletic director Randy McFarlin gave the welcome and told the audience they had a lot to celebrate. "It's been a really big year at Whitehouse. We've had a lot of playoff games, a lot of district championships," said McFarlin, who helped start the year on the right note as head coach of the Wildcat football team. "Overall, this may be the best in a long time."

Following his remarks and the invocation by Jordan Jackson, McFarlin yielded the floor to Steve Emmons of the Whitehouse Athletic Booster Club. Emmons noted the club's success in increasing scholarship monies and number of recipients. In 2005, the booster club gave eight scholarships totaling $6,000. The numbers increased to 10 and $8,000 in '06, and 14 scholarships totaling $10,000 for this year's recipients.

Natalie Holcomb
Kevin Cashion joined Emmons to award scholarships to Sarah Adams, Chelsey Culpepper, Evan Beaton, Chad Emmons, Banks Brandon, Hunter Franklin, Chris Leonard, Ryan Miner, Britt Martin, Lily Rodriguez, Paul Metzner, Jeff Sanders, Luke Shivers and Bradley Wallace. Individual team booster clubs also presented scholarships to many of the senior athletes.

As the respective coaches took the stage, common themes were gratitude to spouses and families for patience and understanding about the demands of the job and appreciation of athletic department secretary Mary Martin.

There were also visible displays of emotion, prompting McFarlin to express appreciation for his group of coaches and to remind parents to do the same.

"We've seen tonight how much they love these kids. They love them like their own," he said. "The medals and honors will fade away, but the relationships with coaches and teammates are forever."

Boys basketball coach Wally Dawkins acknowledged his team's on-the-court success -- 111 wins in four years -- and praised their off-the-court character, especially his group of nine seniors. Dawkins received a plaque from his team, commemorating his 500th win.

Senior Brittani Toole gives girls basketball coach Willie Hill a hug after he got a little choked up talking about this year's team and his graduating players.
Coach Chris Clemons is losing the most seniors -- 11 of his varsity soccer players are graduating. "Usually you say your JV is the future," said Clemons, "but it's our present."

Baseball coach Daniel Robey told the crowd to keep an eye on his team; despite the sub-par record, eight of the team's district losses were by one run.

"We are fixing to turn the corner, and join the group of winners," said Robey.

There were light moments, too, as girls basketball coach Willie Hill recalled coming home during the second week of practice and telling his wife, "We're not going to win a game all year." A week later, he allowed the team might win one.

Despite the slow start, the girls swept the last half of district to make the playoffs.
