Gohmert to attend Troup flag ceremony

The public will have a chance to witness something not normally seen as Troup's American Legion hosts a flag retirement ceremony this Saturday.

This is a first for Post 418 and possibly this area, said Commander Jim Chustz.

"This is the first time that I +

know of in northeast Texas; in fact, I don't know of anybody that's done it," said Chustz.

U.S. Rep. and veteran Louie Gohmert will speak at the ceremony.

Post 418 solicited old and worn flags for the ceremony and Chustz said the response has been good.

"We've had a very positive response for flags, and we're looking for a large turnout, not only for the flag retirement but because of Congressman Gohmert being keynote speaker," said Chutstz.

Saturday's ceremony will feature a dignified disposal of unserviceable American flags conducted by Boy Scout Troup Master Charles Parker, Danny Hayden and the Boy Scout Troup #359 of Whitehouse.

"So many young people, they need to know the values of being an American and the American flag," said Chustz. "I'm so thankful for the Boy Scouts who want to be patriotic."

The Boy Scouts of America are one of the groups formally designated to provide this community service by honorably dis- posing of worn U.S. flags.

"I've talked to adults older than I am that have never seen this ceremony," said Chustz. "It's to honor our country and our flag."

Everyone is invited to attend this event, which begins at 1 p.m. Following the ceremony the American Legion Auxiliary will be serving refreshments and food in the Post banquet hall.
