Elementary-School Report
Summer is a great time to read
Principal Debbie Moxley

School is out! Summer is here. Reading for AR points is just a memory. But, wait just a minute! Summer is not only a time to play baseball and video games. It is a great time to read!

At Troup Elementary, we are very proud of our literacy instruction. Our students are great readers. The 2007 TAKS scores prove this fact. One hundred percent of our third-graders, 99 percent of our fourth-graders, and 94 percent of our fifth-grade students passed the TAKS reading test. We believe that with good literacy instruction and lots of practice, students will achieve reading success.

I urge parents to keep our students involved this summer by having them read or reading to them! The old adage, "Practice makes perfect" has a great deal of truth in it. Reading during the summer will help students maintain the skills they have acquired as well as improve their vocabulary and fluency rates.

During the school year, students are often required to read books that are on certain levels. This summer, let them take advantage of reading the books of their choice! Encourage them to explore different texts such as poetry, plays, comics, and magazines. They may find adventure stories, non-fiction or mysteries enjoyable. There are so many to choose from!

I challenge students to participate in the summer reading program at the Troup Public Library. The theme for this summer is, Sail Away with Books. There are many enriching activities planned. The program will run June 13 through July 25 from 2-4 p.m. each Wednesday. Don't let your child miss out on the fun!
