YesterYear golf tourney has largest field

Winning honors for the lowest gross score was the team of Kurt Kunzman, Roger Lumley, Robin Ballard and Robin Farrell (not pictured).
Despite torrential morning rains and a 30-minute delay, a field of 20 teams stayed the course and finished play in the annual YesterYear golf tournament last Friday.

The team of Doug Kelly, Darren Newhouse, Matt Kelly and Scott Albritton took first place in low net scoring, with Kurt Kunzman, Robin Ballard, Roger Lumley and Robin Farrell yielding the lowest gross total.

As YesterYear celebrates its 25th anniversary, golfers took to the greens for the fifth year in support of the event and, this year, in memory of avid golfer and YesterYear enthusiast Roy Lawrence, who passed away earlier this year.

Organizer Steve Emmons praised Lawrence for his commitment to YesterYear and the community of Whitehouse and said he could always be relied upon to help in any way needed. In his honor, the annual golf event will now be known as the Roy Lawrence Memorial Golf Tournament.

"On behalf of my sister and the Lawrence family, we want to express our appreciation. He would have loved this more than anything," said daughter Leslie Lawrence, who attended the tournament along with his brother, Kirk Lawrence. "Everybody who knew him also knew that golf was his passion. This is the best thing they could have done to honor him."

Hollie Baker and Jon Honea hit the longest drives for women and men.
With a four-person scramble format, 80 players of both sexes and all ages navigated the course at Eagle's Bluff Country Club.

"This was our biggest turnout ever, 20 teams," said organizer Steve Emmons. "We look forward to even more next year." Emmons also added his thanks to those who gave of their time, money or donated prizes to the event.

"The generosity of people is always overwhelming and especially this year with the event being named for Roy," said Emmons.

He also expressed thanks to adding to Mark Cote' and the staff of Eagle's Bluff.

Primary sponsors for the tournament this year were the Medicine Shoppe of Whitehouse, Regions Bank and Golf Connection of Tyler. Other sponsors were: Southside Bank- Whitehouse, East Texas Copy Systems-Rick Fedell, Thrivent Financial-Steve Emmons, Mane Essentials-Martha Hill, the Judy Kunzman Team, Dixie Paper- Paul Shivers, Pirtle Energy Services, Jonathan P.
