Volunteers make a difference at Meals on Wheels service

Jewel Sanchez prepares to deliver food for the Meals on Wheels program.
The Hanks Senior Citizen Center wants you to meet some special people who serve their community. Through rain, shine, sleet, snow and $3 a gallon gas, these people deliver food to the home-bound each day from the center.

Manager Carol Arnold deserves credit for keeping things running in such an orderly manner.

Meals on Wheels volunteers include Debbie, Chris and Jonathan Harmon, Bill and James Smith, Maurine "Pappy" Smith, Lee Barnes, Fred and Jewel Sanchez, Byron and Roxie Dodd, Paul and Dee Anderson, Betty Boulter, Jo Shirey, Becky Tyner, Marzelle Underwood, Jim Linney, Muff Walton, Sherman Mayfield, Angie Coleman, Cammie and Callie and Baby, Gar vin Holmes, Jerry Morgan, Mariam and Gloria Morgan.

"Most of our volunteers are over the age of 50," said Rachel Hatt, director of development and public relations for East Texas Meals on Wheels. "In the summer we face some real challenges when the heat rises and so do the gas prices. We can always use more volunteers."

If you could spare a couple of hours a week to volunteer, contact Meals on Wheels at 903-593-7385.
