Benefits set for Troup teen

Coleton Wedel
There is nothing that Coleton Wedel's friends can do to cure his cancer. But there is something everyone can do to help as he continues to undergo treatment ... play ball and have fun!

The baseball community is asking for your help as they put together a huge day of fun that will benefit a great friend and Carlisle Indian baseball player. Coleton is the son of Ross and Sylvia Wedel of Troup. He was diagnosed May 10 with a tumor located in his lower spine.

On Friday and Saturday, July 13-14, a double elimination baseball tournament will be held with teams playing in Troup, Arp, Carlisle and West Rusk. Game times will start at 2 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday. There is a $300 entry fee per team with the family receiving 100 percent of the proceeds. Game admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students.

"I believe we have 16 teams already committed to play," said Steve Voigt. "It's going to be a great day for a great kid."

Voigt said he became involved in fund-raising efforts shortly after Coleton was diagnosed. "I've known Skinny and his parents for years and we just want to do what we can to help."

The group is also looking for support in the way of donations. During the games, concession stands will be set up. They are asking for donations of paper plates, napkins, ketchup, mayo and mustard. These items can be dropped off no later than July 10 at Petals located in downtown Troup.

Once the games are finished in the outlying areas, the finals will be played at the Troup High School field on Saturday afternoon.

Following the tournament, John Alexander and Trish Roberson, known as Nearly There, will be in concert along with Texas Country Roads. A free-will offering will be taken to be donated to the Wedel family.

This band has a unique country blend making them a very popular group in much demand around East Texas. Trish Roberson, featured vocalist, has a soulful country voice when blended with John's make true magic happen. Trish is a native of Troup and John hails from Bullard.

Come play ball, watch a game, eat a dog, enjoy the music and help a great kid as he does his part in his fight against cancer.
