WHS cheerleaders earn national bids

The varsity, junior varsity and freshman squads of Whitehouse High School cheerleaders returned home with national championship competition bids in their bags.

The teams recently attended a National Cheerleaders Association camp on the Southern Methodist University campus.

"Everything was wonderful," said cheer coach Sharon Attaway. "Our individual staff, the dorms, the facilities and the kids … it was all a wonderful experience."

Along with the national bids came several awards for the squads. Trophies were awarded to the freshmen for NCA game day top team 2007 and to JV for NCA performance top team 2007.

The freshman squad received two ribbons: superior cheer and superior chant. JV received one ribbon for superior cheer and one for excellent chant. Varsity bagged two ribbons for superior cheer and two for superior chant.

Varsity and JV both received S.P.O.T. awards. These are earned by using safety while stunting, spotting and displaying proper stunt techniques.

Varsity also brought home a heukie award which is for exemplary qualities of leadership, values, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

Freshmen and JV both re- ceived technical excellence award for jumps while varsity received technical excellence award for stunts.

All-American nominees were freshmen Haley Terry, Alyssa Smith and Mallory Dolan. JV receiving nominations were Brooke Lovelady, Korbyn Wilson, Tif fany Upshaw and Wendy Weathers. Varsity nominees were Tara Johnston, Scotty Brown, Brittany Millican and Chelsea Primo.

Those moving on to the All American Cheerleader Finals were Scotty Brown, Brooke Lovelady, Korbyn Wilson and Wendy Weathers.

Members of the varsity squad are Capt. Tara Johnston, Brittany Millican Katie Tomlin, Kaylie Harrison, Shanna Gorkman, Chelsea Primo, Mckenzie Tomlin, Megan Clark, Scotty Brown, Jordan Cooke, Kacie Koss and Paige O'Leary. Mascots are Taylor Wright and Ramey Tucker.

JV cheerleaders are Capt. Brooke Lovelady, Aubrie Ellis, Jessica Pike, Jovi Starr, Korbyn Wilson, Rayanne Williams, Tiffany Upshaw and Wendy Weathers.

Freshman squad members are Alyssa Smith, Caroline Weathers, Emily Karlson, Emily Rogers, Haley Ter r y, Mallor y Dolan, Samantha Kennemer and Callie Crispiin.
