Nine young readers "sailed away" with trophies for their excellent records in the Troup Library's "Sail Away with Books," the 2007 Summer Reading Program at the Troup Municipal Library. The Friends of the Troup Library awarded the trophies and other prizes at the summer's final party and celebration.
Over sixty children and parents attended this event to honor all of the participants in the summer program, as well as the volunteers who made the program special this year.
Seventy-eight children signed up for the Summer Reading Program, and 52 turned in reading logs. Altogether, there were 30 pre-school through second grade children enrolled in the program, and they read 2,344 books. Twenty-two children from grades three through seven were enrolled and together they read almost 60,000 pages during the summer program.
In the pre-school through first grade category, Nicholas Jobe won first place. Jeffy McCormack won second place.

In the grade two through four competition, Madison Jobe took first place. Francesca Schell took second place.
In the grades five through seven category, Steve Ballew earned first place. Kayla Crumby earned second place.
Melanie Brumit, chair of the Troup Library's Summer Reading Program, extended special thanks to Southwest Dairy and Viola Singletary for donating refreshments for each meeting and the final party.
At the party, most attendees - children and parents - took home door prizes generously donated by local businesses. The Troup Dairy Queen, Troup Sonic and Video Village deserve special credit for their generous donations.
During the course of the summer, over 50 volunteers participated in telling stories, conducting craft programs, providing refreshments, managing the readers' logs and point system, and presenting programs.

These efforts were essential to the accomplishment of the Troup Library's goals for the 2007 Summer Reading Program: help children love to read, keep up their language skills over the summer, and have great summer fun.
