Tyler East opens strong in world series action
WH players anchor All-Star team

The Tyler East All-Stars trounced the defending World Series champs Tuesday, to take a 2-0 record into the second half of pool play.

Five Whitehouse varsity players are on the senior division team: Heath Mayo, Ryan Bell, Brady Attaway, Grant Brandon and Seth Cashion.

At press time Wednesday morning, the Tyler team had a 7-1 lead over New Jersey in the fourth inning.

Behind the pitching of Mayo, the team shut out defending champs Venezuela Tuesday, 9-0.

Playing in Bangor, Maine, Tyler came out strong in its series debut, handily defeating Lithuania, 10-1, on Monday.

Next up for the Texas reps is Michigan at 8 p.m. Thursday. On Friday, the top two teams from each pool face off for a chance to advance to the World Series title game on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Mayo shut out Venezuela for 6 2/3 innings Tuesday, giving up five hits and just one walk before being relieved for the final out.

It was close for six innings, with the Southwest Regional champs holding a 3-0 lead after scoring in the second and third innings.

Things broke open in the top of the seventh when Tyler scored six runs on seven hits, powered in part by Attaway who went 2-4 at the plate.

In the 10-1 drilliing of Lithuania, the Texas All-Stars outhit their opponents 14-6 and had a five-run fourth inning.

Whitehouse's Bell pitched 5 1/3 innings, and Mayo went 2-4 at the plate.

Tyler East earned the World Series berth by winning the Southwest Regional Championship on Aug. 7 in Blytheville, Ark. The team went 5-1 overall in the tournament and won the double-elimination championship round after defeating Texas West.
