Troup teachers take center stage for TAKS rewards program payout

Dr. Katie Preast, curriculum director at Troup ISD, is interviewed by CBS Channel 19 prior to Monday's awards assembly. In the background, TISD staff prepare the bonus packages.
Troup ISD faculty and staff were the stars Monday as they collected bonuses related to the school's performance in Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills testing from last spring.

More than $100,000 in grants and cash was distributed, with recipients ranging from custodial and maintenance staff to paraprofessionals and teachers. Troup's performance, earning Recognized status at all three campuses and as a district, puts it in select company.

"Troup ISD and Lindale ISD were the only recognized districts in Smith County," said Dr. Katie Preast, curriculum director. "Troup High School was the only high school to be recognized in Smith County."

Additionally, Troup ISD joined just 15 other districts in the East Texas area in receiving Recognized status.

All three of Troup's campuses were Recognized last year, but the district achievement is new.

Middle school teacher Rex Thompson is all smiles as he collects bonus bucks from Troup school board member Johnny Johnson.
"All subpopulations must be at least 75 percent or more in all areas," said Dr. Preast. "Last year what was holding us back was science in African-Americans and low socioeconomic students. This year we are bridging the gaps in those areas. The students are more successful."

The teachers who contribute to that success are rewarded in the TAKS bonus program. All employees receive a cash award based on the performance level of their campus, and teachers receive additional grants and cash in direct proportion to their students' scores.

For example, a TAKS teachers whose students' overall average score was 90 percent or greater receives $750 in educational grants and $350 cash. The amounts drop for scores below 90 percent and again for scores below 80 percent.

Non-TAKS teachers also earn grants and cash, and auxiliary and support staff receive $125 in cash.
