Susie Odell Cresswell

Services for Susie Odell Cresswell, 84, of Whitehouse were held Sept. 16 at Burks Walker Tippit Funeral Directors chapel, Tyler, with the Rev. Sherman Mayfield officiating.

Graveside ser vices were held at Butler Cemetery in Lane, Okla.

Mrs. Cresswell died Sept. 13, 2007 in Tyler.

She was born Jan. 16, 1923 in Boswell, Okla., to the late Joe G. and Suda Francis Barker Simpson. She lived in Oklahoma prior to moving to the Tyler area 32 years ago. She was a retired home care provider, and was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

One of her heart's passions was volunteering and serving as chaplin in the local VFW chapter in Whitehouse. She often participated in many special fund-raising events. She attended numerous local and state meetings and conducted business on behalf of the VFW. She enjoyed the special times that she spent with her friends at the VFW.

Mrs. Cresswell was a proud mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and great-grandmother. Family was a priority to her. Cooking big meals and anticipating the arrival of family members made her so happy. She loved to reminisce about past loved ones and share memories of them with the new generation of grandchildren. Often she would remind her granddaughters that "times were tough, but God always provided, so stay strong and be faithful." Just recently, one of her great-granddaughters was complimented by her employer for being strong, independent and assertive. The great granddaughter replied, "Thank you. I come from a long line of strong women."

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Jack Yates and Steven D. Cresswell; two grandchildren; four brothers; and four sisters.

Survivors include son, Billy Yates, Lane, Okla.; daughters, Joyce Harden, Whitehouse, Bobbie Allen, Oklahoma City, Okla., Ann Howry, Artesia, N.M., Patsy Tomera, Carlin, Nev., and Wanda Yates, LaMoille, Nev.; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Honorary pallbearers were David Harden, Chance Harden Pettey, Ethan David Ruesewald, Ron Allen, Casey Markham and Jimmy McDonald.
