WH officers involved in fatal shooting

The investigation continues by Texas Rangers into Tuesday night's shooting which resulted in the death of a Whitehouse man identified as 42-year-old Thomas Edward Topliff.

Shortly before 7 p.m., Whitehouse officers responded to the home at 202 Parkdale on a reported domestic dispute.

Officers reportedly were met at the door by Topliff wielding a shot gun. The officers ordered him to put his gun down and come out of the house.

Witnesses say the man went back into his house and then ran outside firing his gun at the officers.

Smith County Justice of the Peace, Pct. 3, James Meredith pronounced the man dead at 12:30 p.m., although the time of death was listed as 6:58 p.m., when the shooting took place.

While no officers were injured in the incident, patrol cars were riddled with shots from Topliff's gun.

Topliff's body was sent to Southwest Forensics Lab in Dallas for an autopsy.

This is the second fatal shooting involving Whitehouse police in recent months. Officer Trent Richardson was no-billed by the grand jury for the shooting of Lynn Smith on June 5.
