WHS 'Have a Hat Day' benefits cancer patients

In an effort to raise cancer awareness, Whitehouse High School hosted a "Have a Hat Day" on Oct. 17.

"Students could wear a hat to school if they made a donation of at least $1to receive a pink ribbon stamp," Student Council Co-Sponsor David Bell said. "Student Council came up with the idea to localize a successful national program during October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month."

WHS participated in the national program last year, donating about $275. But this year StuCo decided to work with the Tyler Hematology Oncology Clinic to help local cancer patients purchase new hats.

"We decided to purchase new hats with the money because the winter season is coming," Bell said. "And patients may feel self-conscious. Principal Tony Black thought it was a worthy program and great opportunity to help the community."

StuCo hopes to sponsor several hat days periodically throughout the year.

"We hope to involve the community with later hat days," Bell said. "People can stop by the campus or contact businesses to help our local cancer patients."
