Seventh-grade teams top Mavs

The Whitehouse seventh grade traveled to Marshall last week with the "B" team winning 26-8 and the "A" team winning a hard fought contest 12-8.

In the "B" game, Seth Butler scored one TD on a run for the Wildcats, and Andrew Stephenson and Devyn Humphrey both scored for the Wildcats on interception returns. Elijah Stevenson also scored for Whitehouse.

In the "A" game, QB Will Weathers hooked up with Michael Nuon for a 48-yard TD connection to give Whitehouse an early lead at 6-0. Aaron Clemons also recovered a fumble for the Cats in the second quarter.

The Wildcat defense, led by Brandon Beaton, Kyle Battles, and Hunter Conn held the Marshall offense at bay until the Mavericks scored at the second half buzzer, and with the two-point conversion, Marshall took the lead at the half 8-6.

In the third quarter, Marshall looked poised to keep the lead, but Chris Kunzman picked off a pass at the Wildcat 17-yard line to stop the drive. Whitehouse then turned to RB Dylan Cantrell late in the fourth quarter.

Cantrell first picked up a first down on a 25-yard run. Then, he picked up nine more yards, and a five-yard facemask call moved the ball down to the Maverick 22.

From there, Cantrell got the call one final time for a 22-yard burst into the end zone, and the Wildcats reclaimed the lead 2- 8.

The Whitehouse defense then sealed the win when Conn forced a fumble, and Beaton recovered the loose ball. The offense then ran out the clock to give the Cats the 12-8 victory.

The seventh grade team will travel to Jacksonville Tuesday night to play their final game of the season. The "B" game is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. with the "A" game immediately to follow.
