Ladycats ready to build on last year's success The 2006 varsity Ladycat basketball team started slow but finished strong, winning their last nine district games to make the playoffs. Although they lost to Frisco in the second round, head coach Willie Hill hopes the momentum that carried them into the playoffs will spark a quicker start to the 2007 season. Another spark for the team could be the addition of five players from the JV squad: Haylee Aldredge, Rebecca Hanna, Alexa Fisher, Regan Hawkins and Kaycee Renn. "These younger girls are talented, but just inexperienced," said Hill. "When they get some games under their belt and playing time, they should be a big held to the team." Hill said the team is stronger talent-wise, a little taller and could be improved in the depth department if his newest varsity members hit their stride. "Depth is my only real worry right now because of lack of experience," he said. Hill does have proven experience and output from his returning lettermen: seniors Kayla Mason and Jordan Knight, juniors Shelly Williams and Alicia Cordova and sophomore Caroline Perrier. All of these girls picked up All-District honors last year, and Hill was named the 12-4A Coach of the Year. Hill said the team has looked good in preseason scrimmages, though his younger players need to take care of the ball better and the team as a whole needs to work on free throws. "We couldn't throw a ball in a swimming pool," he said, though he praised the team's cohesiveness and the guidance his veterans are showing. "This is a good group of ladies and they are working well together," he said. "I encourage the people to come out and support them. Our crowds picked up last year, and I know winning helps, but we need the support of the community." The Ladycats face Carthage at noon on Saturday in their first game and then will take on Lufkin Hudson at home on Nov. 13.
