Freshman teams defeat Marshall; close out season tonight in Nac

The Whitehouse freshman teams were in action last Thursday night as they played host to the Marshall Mavericks.

In the "B" game, the Wildcats provided a come-frombehind win in the second half on a 21-yard TD pass from Brendon Hedges to Zach Kennedy to give the Cats a 12-8 victory.

The Wildcats scored early behind Jacob Gardner's strong running down into Marshall territory. Hedges finished the drive off with a 17-yard TD run to give the Cats the early 6-0 lead.

The Mavericks took the lead right before the half on an 80-yard TD completion and a two-point conversion to move ahead 8-6.

After the go ahead score in the second half, the Wildcat defense stifled the Maverick attack to preserve the win.

The "A" team got in a hole early as Marshall scored on its first possession to take an early 8-0 lead. The drive was highlighted by a fake punt to get the ball down to the Wildcat 22 before scoring on a 22-yard TD pass.

The Wildcats struck back quick on its initial drive going 50 yards on seven plays with most of the damage being done through the running of Shundrick Beasley.

The drive ended with a Beasley two-yard run, but the PAT was missed making the score 8-6 in favor of the Mavericks.

On Marshall's next possession, Demonte Brown picked off a pass returning it to the Marshall 18 where QB Patrick Cook hit Terrance Franklin for an 18-yard TD pass to give the Wildcats the 12-6 lead.

The Wildcat offense was in high gear in the first quarter scoring again on its next possession as Cook started the scoring drive with consecutive first down completions to Logan Newton before Beasley broke loose on a 43-yard scoring run. The PAT was missed again, and the Cats lead was now 18-8.

A mistake by the Mavericks' special teams led to the next score as a bad snap on the punt went through the end zone for a two-point safety giving the Cats a 20- 8 lead at the half.

The second half went much like the first as Cook picked up a big first down on a third down scramble to the Marshall 45. From there, Beasley ran to the 27, and then Cook hit Franklin at the Marshall 4.

After a holding penalty, the Wildcats were faced with a fourth down at the 16, but Cook hit Newton in the end zone for the score. The PAT by Johnathan Parker moved the lead to 27-8.

Parker ended the scoring in the fourth quarter on a 35-yard field goal to make the final 30-8.

The Wildcats will travel to Nacogdoches tonight as they attempt to claim the district title and keep their undefeated district record in tact.
