TUESDAY BASKETBALL SCORES Whitehouse 79, Irving MacArthur 60 The Whitehouse Wildcats boys basketball team lived up to its #5 state ranking in class 4A (Texas Preps Basketball Magazine), soundly defeating host Irving Macarthur Cardinals, 79-60, in the season opener for both squads. The class 5A Cardinals took a 2-0 lead to start the game. Little did they know it would be their only lead of the night. Whitehouse, paced by 6'8 junior post Jacob Holmen's 25 points, 11 rebounds and 6 blocked shots, led Irving 34-22 at the half. 5'11 junior point guard Mitch Marquis, who tallied 18 points and 9 assists, and 6'5 guard Kyle Ford, who also had 18 on the evening, pushed the lead over the Cardinals to 24 midway through the fourth quarter. The Cats also received scoring help from Cade Clark (8), Tanner Fedell (5), Blake Anglin (5), while Kody Molloy and Jud Jackson added 2 apiece. The Wildcats now play host to the Longview Lobos on Tuesday, Nov. 20, and then are part of the Burger King Classic at UTTyler where they meet Dallas Skyline at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 23. Ladycats 52, Lufkin Hudson 27 The Whitehouse girls varsity team evened it preseason record to 1-1 with a big win over Lufkin Hudson at home. Alicia Cordova had 18 points and the Ladycats outscored Lufkin Hudson 29-10 over the second and third quarters to pull away. Kayla Mason added 14 points, followed by Caroline Perrier with 7 and Shelly Williams with 6. The subvarsity teams split, with the JV losing 35-38 and the freshmen winning 31-11. The home win followed a close loss to Carthage last week, 43-47. The JV and frosh both won. Cordova and Williams were top scorers with 17 and 8, followed by Mason with 7. "This was one of those games where if anything could go wrong, it did, but I guess if you had to have one like this, it is good to get it out first," said head coach Willie Hill, citing the team's poor free-throw shooting (7-of-17) and turnovers (23) as factors in the loss. |
