The Whitehouse Wildcats pushed their overall record to 8-1 with four wins in the Abilene Tournament this past weekend.
Whitehouse started the tourney by downing Brownwood, 66-38, behind Jacob Holmen's 22 points, while Cade Clark added 16. Then the Cats toppled San Angelo Lakeview, 69-38, behind Kody Molloy's 14 points as Clark added 13.
In the feature game Friday night, the Cats knocked off the #6 ranked 3A team, the Abilene Wylie Bulldogs, 64-54, in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an 18-13 first quarter lead, but WHS pulled within one, 27-26, by halftime. A big third quarter by guards Mitch Marquis and Kyle Ford, tallying 7 points each, helped the Cats pull away.
Whitehouse then toppled the state's #2 class AA team, the Jim Ned Indians, by a score of 48-39 as Holmen poured in 18 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and recorded 7 shot blocks.
"Going out to Abilene really helps our team," said head coach Wally Dawkins.
"It builds team spirit, the boys kinda get together out there, and we use it as a springboard for district. We usually play some good teams out there who play a different style from what we are used to."
Kyle Ford was selected to the All-Tournament Team, while Mitch Marquis was named MVP of the tournament.
Whitehouse now plays at Midlothian Friday night, then the Cats play host to Kilgore in the District 12-4A opener next Tuesday in Wildcat Arena.
"Everything you do, you do in preparation to be successful in league play. We are not playing as well right now as I would like, but hopefully that will turn into a positive as maybe we will peak later when we really need to," said Dawkins.
Whitehouse won the District 12-4A championship last year, going 14-0 in conference.
After facing Kilgore, the Wildcats will travel to Jacksonville on the 21st to face one of the district's favorites in the Indians.
Against Kilgore and Jacksonville, ninth grade action begins at 5 p.m., JV at 6:15 and varsity at 7:30.
