Meals on Wheels receives grant funds

Meals on Wheels Ministry (MOW) has been working on grant funding made possible by the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) via House Bill 407: Texans Feeding Texans Program.

This is a pilot program that provides 10 million dollars in funding for this year and 10 million for next year to help offset costs for unfunded meals served by MOW and other meal service providers.

MOW currently serves 10 counties across East Texas including Smith, Gregg, Henderson, Van Zandt, Harrison, Wood, Upshur, Panola, Camp and Rains. With applications submitted for Smith, Van Zandt, Wood Henderson, Gregg, Upshur, Harrison and Rains counties, MOW was awarded a total of $442,135.00. The funds will be spent to service clients in the counties for which the funding was granted.

"We have worked extensively on these grants for several months now." said Mike Powell, executive director, MOW. "We are thrilled about this new source of funding for East Texas. This new funding will allow us to fulfill numerous needs that have gone unmet because of a lack of funding over the past several years."

The following is a breakdown of the awards to MOW for services in each county:
Smith - $184,607
Van Zandt - $67,916
Wood - $56,338
Henderson - $41,548
