Almost 400 students took part in Troup High School's second annual College and Career Day Monday.
Juniors and seniors from New Summerfield, Overton, Leverett's Chapel and Arp joined THS upperclassmen in receiving information from 17 college recruiters as well as representatives from the Army, National Weather Ser vice, Texas Department of Transportation and Lake Country Area Health Education Center.
"It's really grown in size this year," said THS counselor Tracye Martin, adding that inviting area schools to attend was a change from last year. "We thought that would help draw recruiters and make it more worthwhile for them," she said.
It seemed to work, as the gym was packed with students visiting college booths manned by local and state recruiters, as well as at least one out-of-state university.
"Supt. Beaty is really big on making sure our kids know what's available to them," said Martin. "We want to broaden their knowledge of where they might go and what they might do.
Colleges participating were Texas Tech University, LeTourneau University, East Texas Baptist University, Panola College, Lon Morris Junior College, Texas A&M University, Tyler Junior College.
Also, Sam Houston University, Jarvis Christian College, Texas State Technical College, Missippi State, Stephen F. Austin, Dallas Art Institute, Kilgore College, Tarleton State University, Rice University and The University of Texas - Tyler.
Jessica Chiles, a recruiter from Lon Morris, said these events were beneficial for both students and colleges.
"They get to talk to a real person and ask questions their counselor may not be able to help them with," she said.
The recruiters get to spread word about their schools as well as get followup information from interested seniors.

Martin said they hope to have the Career and College Day in the fall next year while many seniors are still deciding where to go.
In addition to the college fair set up in the gymnasium, TISD also offered Career Day featuring an assortment of guest speakers talking to morning and early afternoon classes.
