Killian wins national art contest Two East Texas students have won second place prizes in a national student art contest addressing the theme "Education and My Future." Meagan Killian, a second grader at Brown Elementary School in Whitehouse, placed second in the PreK-second grade level category with her drawing, titled "Bright Future." Katelyn Dacus, an 11th grader at the Brook Hill School in Bullard, placed second in the 10th-12th grade category with the painting "Cogito Ergo Sum." SEDL, a nonprofit educational research and development organization, sponsored the contest in conjunction with the opening of the organization's new headquarters building in Austin. "This contest reflects SEDL's emphasis on education as critical to our future as individuals and as a society," said SEDL president and CEO Wesley A. Hoover. "In our work with schools, communities, and state departments of education we strive for a bright future for all students, and the winning art work beautifully illustrates that future." Meagan and Katelyn each won an iPod Nano. Their work will be displayed along with 11 other student winners on SEDL's Web site at http:// www.sedl.org/artcontest/. Each winner's school will also receive $100 in commemoration of the student's achievement. |
