Troup trustees call for election
Andy Griffin to run for Place 1

Troup school board members called for an election for places one, two and three at their regular monthly meeting on Monday. With filing opening that day, it was also announced that Andy Griffin had filed for place one, Kevin Martin place three and incumbent Melissa Young for place two.

At press time, Keith Lindsey and Kent Lindsey, who hold places one and two respectively, had not filed.

The board also approved an interlocal agreement with Smith County to hold the election on Saturday, May 10 at the Cameron-J. Jarvis Troup Municipal Library. Early voting will run April 28 through May 6. Weekday voting hours will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with special hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on May 5 and 6.

Trustees also approved an addendum to the middle school and high school student handbook which covers dating violence and bullying. The policy gives the school the authority to issue "stay away" warnings if a relationship between students meets the critieria of dating violence or bullying.

Supt. Marvin Beaty said that the state-mandated policy would cover "anything that disrupts learning based on a relationship with another student."

In other agenda matters, trustess also approved:

-- a resolution for the After School Arts Program;

-- the 2008-09 school calendar;

-- updated local board policies.

Following an executive session, the board voted to renew administrative contracts as presented. Trustee Johnny Johnson abstained from the voting since his wife's contract was involved.

Trustees also approved technology integration stipends and the addition of a technology integration position.

Trustees also heard an update concerning work on the softball field from Dewayne Brown and a financial report from Jennifer Stewart. Campus principals made their student and employee of the month presentations.
