Tigers set to repeat title at Super Series Tournament

Photo/Jim Jackson The Whitehouse Wildcats varsity boys team will be in the Lufkin Hudson Tournament this week. With three scrimmages under their belt, the Cats have tournament appearances scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m. and Friday, Feb. 22 at 5 p.m., both at Central. Coach Daniel Robey said he has been pleased with the team's performance in each scrimmage, adding that his pitching staff deserved praise in the Gladewater outing.
The Troup Tigers look to kick-start the fledgling baseball season with a repeat championship in the Super Series Tournament, on tap this week with games in Troup, Arp and West Rusk.

Troup brought home the first place trophy in last year's event en route to a 26-7 season. The Tigers were area finalists and earned their second straight district championship.

This will be Troup's first tournament outing after four scrimmages and Tuesday's games with Palestine Westwood.

The Tigers first opponent in the Super Series will be Mt. Pleasant Chapel Hill, scheduled for noon Thursday, Feb. 21 at Troup. A win would pit the Tigers against the winner of the Overton-T.K. Gorman contest, with the game to be played in West Rusk at noon on Friday.

Another win would see the Tigers play again Friday in West Rusk at 6:45 p.m. The championship game will be played 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Arp.

A loss in their first game would have Troup playing at 6:45 p.m. Thursday on their home field with the opponent TBA.

The Tigers are led by head coach Cal Sparks, who has amassed a 65-23 record.

The team did well in last year's All-District voting, with then-senior Nick Harrison picking up District 21-AA MVP honors and pitcher Adam Voigt receiving Newcomer of the Year.

In addition to Harrison, the Tigers lost six seniors from last year's team: Brice Clark, Chris Davis, Hagan Patterson, Jaron Hasley, Jason O'Steen and Justan O'Steen.

The list of games scheduled at Troup on Thursday, Feb. 21 includes: Troup vs. MPCH, noon ; Grace vs. Grand Saline, 2:15 p.m.; Joaquin vs. Garrison, 4:30 p.m.; TBA 6:45 p.m.

On Friday, Tiger field will host games at noon, 2:15 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 6:45 p.m.

One consolation game will be played in Troup on Saturday at noon.
