Sluggers win home opener

The Whitehouse varsity baseball team got the season off to a good start last Tuesday by defeating Robert E. Lee 5-1 at Wildcats Park in both teams season opener.

The Wildcats wasted little time in getting to Lee starting pitcher, Jody Ellis, as Ryan Bell started the rally in the bottom of the first with a triple to deep right-center. After Blake Simpson was hit by a pitch, Grant Brandon came up with two outs. Brandon ripped a double down the right field line scoring Bell and Simpson. Taylor Peterson then followed with a double to right-center to drive in Brandon and give the Cats an early 3-0 lead.

The Cats jumped out for two more runs in the second inning.

The five runs scored by the Cats proved to be more than enough for Peterson as he worked a strong five innings on the hill for the Wildcats as the senior allowed only two hits, striking out seven while only walking one. Simpson worked the sixth and seven innings to pick up the save.
