Wildcats finish 2nd in Classic

The Whitehouse varsity baseball team hosted its annual spring classic last weekend and ended up with the second place trophy falling to the tourney champs from Central Heights.

In the opening game on Thursday, Whitehouse defeated Paris 8-1 with Taylor Peterson earning the win on the hill. The game was tied 1-1 headed into the bottom of the fifth when Cody Brown led things off with a single and was followed by a double by Heath Mayo. Ryan Bell then reached on a throwing error that scored Brown and Mayo and then trotted home on a deep home run to left by Blake Simpson making the score 5-1.

The Wildcats then pushed three more across in the sixth for an 8-1 lead and Peterson held the Paris bats in check for the win.

Whitehouse then played their second game that night against Brownsboro. Matt Durst worked the mound for the Cats earning the win, 9-5. The Wildcats built a 6-1 lead headed into the top of the fifth only to see the Bears cut the lead to 6-5. However the Wildcats would notch three runs in the bottom of the inning highlighted by Kevan House's double to left-center to drive in two runs. Brown then pushed the last run across on a bunt single.

The Cats next faced Central Heights on Friday and stormed away with a 14-4 win backed by 14 hits. Durst had a 3-3 night while Brown went 2-2 and Tyler Spitzmiller went 2-4. Mayo earned the win on the hill going the distance for the Cats.

After going 3-0 in pool play, Whitehouse faced off with Central Heights again on Saturday in the championship game. Things looked tougher for the Wildcats as they faced the Blue Devils ace, Trey Haley, who has committed to pitch at Rice University after he graduates.

The Cats struggled at the plate but managed to push across two runs in the bottom on the fourth on a double by Brown scoring Brady Attaway and Peterson to tie the game at 2-2 headed into the sixth inning. As Haley held Whitehouse at bay, Grant Brandon matched him pitch for pitch through five innings until he was forced to leave the mound from stiffness in his back.

The Cats then fell apart in the sixth and seventh innings, giving up 10 runs to fall 12-2 to the Blue Devils. Whitehouse managed just 5 hits in the game and could not make the most of Haley's wildness in the middle innings. Four errors also did not help the Cats' cause in the game.

The Cats travel today to Conroe for the Caney Creek/ New Caney tournament.
