Students at Troup Middle School have been raising money for Troup Cares, learning about pi, and enjoying pie while celebrating Pi Day.
Pi Day was March 14 (or 3/ 14), the day mathematicians celebrate the number pi (3.141592653...). Math teachers and students at TMS celebrate Pi Awareness Week every year. Students calculate pi, memorize the digits of pi, win pies in an old-fashioned pie walk, eat pies, and toss pies.
Students had the opportunity to help others by donating to Troup Cares while purchasing "pieces of pi" for 25 cents each. The seventh grade raised the most money, earning the chance to throw cream pies at math teacher Cassie Blanton.
The students of TMS raised a total of $540.25.
This year two students memorized more than 100 digits of the neverending pi, eighthgrader Allie Bowers (103) and seventh-grader Seth Bullock (101).
