Junior high boys show improvement over year The Whitehouse Junior High boys track teams competed at the district meet in Marshall, with the eighth grade finishing fourth and the seventh grade tied for seventh. "The boys did very well over the course of the season," said coach David Smith. "We had a lot of inclement weather that put us behind on our progress, but the boys worked extremely hard and remained patient." Smith pointed to a few individual performances that were highlights of the junior Wildcats shortened season. Gunnar Dorsey ran an 11.5 in the 100 meter dash; Nick House high jumped 5'10"; and Corey Schmoker was a double gold winner in the 2400 and 1600 meter runs. Also, Dylan Cantrell ran a 59 in the 400 meter dash, while Troy Hayden had good times in the 2400 and 1600 runs. Smith said seventh-grader Hunter Conn came very close to throwing 40' in the shot during the year, but missed the district meet because he had his appendix removed. "Coach Brown and I were very pleased and couldn't have asked for better boys to work with," said Smith, adding that on more than one occasion the Whitehouse coaches were compliment on their teams' effort and sportsmanship. "There was one coach that even said, 'I wish our boys were more like your boys.'" Hallsville captured the top spot in both seventh and eighth grade divisions. "The boys competed hard, but lacked depth to really compete for the title," said Smith. "Hallsville just had way too many kids." Eighth grade team standings were: Hallsville (146), Kilgore (121), Henderson (116), Whitehouse (77.5), Marshall (66), Moses (38), McMichael (18), Jacksonville (28) and Pine Tree (9.5).
Seventh grade team standings were: Hallsville (168), McMichael (126), Jacksonville (123), Pine Tree (78), Marshall (44), Henderson (37), Moses (22) and Whitehouse (22). |
