Ladycats win 1st district title
The Whitehouse girls track team earned its first-ever district title Wednesday, narrowly defeating host team Hallsville to win the district meet.
With Whitehouse leading 112 to 94 heading into the mile relay, the district title was still up for grabs.
The Lady Bobcats won the night's last event and picked up 20 points, leaving it to the Ladycats to claim the title with a fifth place or better finish. The team of Jesse Allen, Mollie Jamison, Jenae Lacey and Brittany Wilkens came through, finishing fourth to give the Ladycats 120 points on the night, compared to Hallsville's 114.
"Every point was critical," said girls head coach Jeffrey Reece. "I told the girls before the meet that it was going to be close and every point was very important. I guess I was right."
Kate Mohr's second-place finish in the mile run, the next-to-last event, was also a key factor as it gave Whitehouse the luxury of not having to place higher in the final relay.
After Whitehouse and Hallsville, the teams finished in the order of Kilgore, Marshall, Pine Tree, Jacksonville, Nacogdoches and Henderson.
Hallsville led all teams with 49 points after the field events, followed by 27 for Nacogdoches and 24 for Whitehouse.
The Ladycats immediately began to chip away at the deficit, with wins in the 3200 and 800 meter runs thanks to senior Brittany Wilkens, as well as the thirdplace finish of the 4x100 meter relay team.
Whitehouse overtook the Lady Bobcats in the 100 meter hurdles, with Chasity Stewart taking first and teammates Sarah Stanley and Cr ystal McPherson adding fourth and fifth place points to give the Ladycats a 78 to 70 advantage.
The top-three finishers in each event advance to the regional meet.
Wilkens and Stewar t lead the Whitehouse contingent, advancing in two individual events, with Stewart also running a leg in the 4x100 meter relay. Other regional qualifiers are Krystal Gordon, Brittaney Tate, Stephanie Alexander, Jesse Allen, Shan Butler, Mollie Jamison, Jenae Lacey and Mohr.
