Boys team earns trip to state
TROUP GOLF

Paced by a late birdie and eagle from Drew Marshall, the Troup boys golf team grabbed second place in the Class 2A Region III golf tournament last week, qualifying them for a trip to state on May 5-6.

With Edgewood finishing first for its fourth straight trip to the state tournament, the Tigers pulled out a come-frombehind rally for second.

Trailing Warren by four strokes on the final day, the Troup team tightened its game on the back nine to pull ahead by two and grab the last state berth.

The trip to state is a welcome turn of events for the Tigers, who finished third last year.

"We got that monkey off our back," said Tigers coach John Eastman, who cited the play of Jordan Jackson, Corey Caraway and Marshall in leading the charge. "The top three kids, they gutted it up and stuck with it. We got ourselves back in it."

Playing at Oak Hurst Country Club in Bullard, the Tigers finished with a two-day team total of 708. Individual results were: Jackson 77-88-165; Caraway 95-83-178; Marshall 80-82- 162; Curt Lindsey 102-101-203; Brad Bentley 106-108-214.

All told, four teams and four individuals will represent the region May 5-6 at Austin's Roy Kizer Golf Course.
