Students return to open time capsule
BURIED MEMORIES

First-graders prepare to bury a time capsule outside of Cain Elementary in 1997.
Several former students of Paula Guthrie's first grade class gathered outside their old classroom at Cain Elementary recently to unearth a time capsule the class created and buried in 1997.

Along with a bit of water that seeped into the plastic pickle jar, the seniors and Guthrie pulled out Zip-lock bags containing special treasures, long-ago hidden away.

While only six of the classmates reunited for the reveal, they enjoyed cake and punch to celebrate their upcoming graduation and finished off the day with story time, just like back in first grade. Guthrie read a book named "The Dot." It is the story of a grade school girl who believes she cannot draw. Through the wit and encouragement of her teacher the young artist discovers she does have talent and looks at the many ways she can make her own mark in the world. This was the message Guthrie had for her former students.
Patrick Sanders and Austin Risher join former teacher Paula Guthrie in opening the contents of the 1997 time capsule.
